Pin-up style was born in the 1930s and 40s. Many of its followers credit old-time Burlesque dancers, who created flyers and posters to promote their shows, as the actual originators of the art.
The art depicted a less restrictive, more casual, free and flirty approach to fashions and style. Renowned commercial artists and illustrators like Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren took note and created playful and sexy paintings of women which were often mesmerizing in their style and technique. These expert illustrations appeared nearly everywhere in print… advertisements, postcards, posters, magazines and calendars. Even before these works of art had aged, they became highly-collected as “pin-ups.”
World War II had a very profound effect on the popularity of the Pin-Up. Soldiers of the Allied Forces around the world held them as keepsakes and as reminders of what they missed about home. Pin-Ups became symbols of freedom, safekeeping and good luck. Artwork paying tribute to gorgeous girls of the pin-up culture decorated fighter planes and bombers, tanks, combat vehicles and ships at sea.
The eye-catching models that posed for these images affectionately became known as “pin-up girls”. And, their grace and uplifting looks became the focus and soul of pin-up fashion. One of the first of these women was actress and 1940s Hollywood star, Betty Grable. The blonde and leggy Betty wearing a modest bathing suit in her famous photo ultimately became revered as a playful, mild not wild, sex symbol.
Pin-Up girls quietly became the rage in popular culture. Girls everywhere pursued the dream of becoming a pin-up model. And the average guy, fantasized about having one on his arm. While the Pin-up style has evolved and changed over the years, it has mostly kept the inspiration of glamour and fit beauty as its heart and essence.
